Looking to Reach New Writers This Year to Land Your Clients More Coverage? You'll Want to Tune Into This Workshop
Plus, if you know someone impacted (or you yourself were) by the LA fires, please let me know how those of us out of the danger zones but local in LA can help!
Thanks to everyone who reached out about the fires!
Grateful our house and family are OK but man it’s been scary and stressful, especially having a little kiddo in this (he’s been keeping me sane with all his giggles and his adorableness with learning to walk — super cute content on my Instagram in that department if you’re looking for a smile).
And this air quality is ahhh. I’ve been having headaches the last few days even though I have HEPA air filters CRANKED in my house. I’m sure a lot of it is stress too.
I hope everyone out there dealing with this is OK and if you lost your house or someone you know did, please let me know how I can help. I’m part of a bunch of moms around LA groups and everyone is asking how they can help right now so if you have a friend or family member or coworker or anyone you know who was impacted by the fires that needs help, please send them my way! Donations, $, in person volunteer opps, you name it, I’ll do what I can go help get people to make it happen.
It’s been impossibly hard to work the last few weeks, as I’m sure it’s been for many of you too.
That being said, Jill Schildhouse and I have a really cool workshop coming up (that we scheduled before the city of LA — and now San Diego ::sigh:: — were up in flames) that I wanted to take a minute to tell you about. I’ve been slacking on promoting it and wanted to get the word out so you all have the opportunity to tune in.
As most of you know, the industry is experiencing yet another round of shakeups. Editors are losing their jobs, writers are getting laid off and we’ve heard of so many publicists losing clients in these uncertain times.
By now you’ve probably heard that DotDash Meredith had huge layoffs last week. Add that to the other unfortunate layoffs that have happened over the last few months:
Vox Media laid off a ton of staff and it looks like Thrillist might be over
DotDash Meredith laid off 53 people
Hearst laid off 200 employees
TMB laid off an unknown number of employees, mostly in the e-commerce departments across all brands
And here’s a link to a whole bunch more layoffs
With all this movement in the industry, one of the smartest steps you can make now is to build and foster your network. January is a great time to:
Intro yourself to new journalists you’ve never worked with before
Touch base with journalists you’ve fallen out of touch with
Reconnect with your go-to journalists
Put yourself in positions to meet new journalists
Team up with new journalists to try new things for your clients
On that note, we’re bringing back one of our most popular workshops this month in a group format. It’s been an entire year since we’ve offered this and it’s been highly requested so here goes… and we’ve updated our presentation for today’s ever-changing journalism landscape, of course!
